Classical Piece of the Week: Gymnopédie No.1

I was surfing the web, in search of classical pieces, when I stumbled onto a website that featured this piece on its Top 10 Classical Pieces list. Needless to say, I fell in love. Entitled Gymnopédie No.1, this piano work is composed by Erik Satie, and is the first out of three "gymnopédies" written by Satie.

This piece can best be described as atmospheric. It does not have the joyfullest of melodies, but it does make you feel like your floating off the ground. Or that you're on a boat ride, with the sun shining on your face, the grass glistening from the early morning due, and the feeling that you're in a dream, because everything is so bright, so calm, so peaceful... Or maybe it makes you feel like you're in a garden, picking up tulips and daisies, with your lover by your side.

Gymnopédie No.1 is so simple... yet so full of complex emotions. Peaceful, calm, painful, sad, melancholic, dreamy... Just like you were in a fantasy.

Enjoy.

Note: This video includes all three of the gymnopédies. Feel free to listen to all of them! The first one ends at around 3:30.
